2010
New Year’s Day dawned cool and clear and minty (sorry!) sunny!  The ‘fresh start’ run involved a two-pronged approach for a communal lunch venue at the Pickwick Inn at St Issey near Padstow.

Seven 5s met at Morrisons at Liskeard for the east end start and six 5s met at Roger Collins of Probus for the west end start.  The west end fives, headed by Sharon and Mike, wound their way up and onto the coastal road north of Newquay, passing Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth whilst the east end convoy headed by Mike G travelled through various villages on the edge of Bodmin Moor from St Cleer to Jamaica Inn at Bolventor where we stopped for coffee.  If we thought it was cold in Liskeard at the start of the run, here on Bodmin Moor it was positively freezing (or even a degree or two below)!  The pub car park, including the overflow, was indeed overflowing and there were even vehicles parked on the roadside.  Strategically placed signs suggested a run was taking place in the area – hats off to them – give me a civilised warm MX anytime!

The convoy then headed off deeper into Bodmin Moor where a number of New Year’s Day events were taking place, including one or more equestrian events which provided some interesting traffic manoeuvres between cars and horse boxes!  Eventually, our destination reached, we gratefully entered the Pickwick Inn to warmth, food and friends.

Suitably fed, watered and warmed the larger afternoon convoy made its way via wonderful ocean scenery – Mawgan Porth, Harlyn and Constantine Bays - and the Cornish Alps, towards Lostwithiel where at the Golf and Country Club, we socialised over tea and biscuits before wending our individual ways home.  A great start to the New Year!

Thanks to Sharon and Mike and Mike G for heading the groups and providing a thoroughly enjoyable day.
